Christ’s parable is about the search for something that truly has value. The merchant searches for pearls. He sees many beautiful stones, but among them he finds one so precious that he realizes everything else no longer carries the same meaning. So he sells everything he has in order to possess it. For the modern person, this parable feels especially relevant. We live surrounded by an overwhelming abundance of things, opportunities, and other people’s ideas of success. We are constantly offered something that is supposed to make us happier: more money, recognition, achievements, beautiful possessions. We can spend years collecting these “pearls” and still feel that something is missing. But the parable asks a different question: what is your precious pearl? What in your life is valuable enough that you would be willing to let go of what has become secondary?
